Prepare a one-page summary
- The broad type of concern and the location connected to it
- The key events in date order
- The parties involved and your relationship to them
- Any notice, hearing or response date already communicated to you
- What you want to understand or achieve
List documents before sending them
Make a list of agreements, notices, receipts, correspondence or court papers you already have. Keep original records safe. Ask which copies are needed, through which channel and for what purpose before sharing them.
Write down your priority questions
- What further information is needed to assess the concern?
- What are the possible next steps and practical uncertainties?
- Who will handle the work, and how will updates be provided?
- What is covered by the proposed fee?
- What deadlines need separate attention?
Confirm the consultation terms
Before a paid discussion, confirm the fee, duration or scope where relevant, payment method and cancellation policy. Keep a receipt and any written engagement terms.
After the conversation
Make a note of the advice you received, the information still required and any action you agreed to take. If a point is unclear, ask for clarification. A website enquiry by itself does not mean anyone has accepted responsibility for your matter.
